The Beacon: January 2024

The Beacon: January 2024

January is the month of new. A new year and people making new resolutions, deciding to make new changes to hopefully better their lives. The sad news is that only 9% of people will actually keep their resolutions for the entire year. Why are we so resistant to change? Humans are creatures of habit. Change can be scary for some. It breaks us out of our comfort zone which brings unknown results. The good news is that those results have just as much opportunity to be positive.

I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. Change is a good thing, always. We may not feel that at the time we are going through a relationship change, a career change, a relocation (military or otherwise), etc. Hindsight is 20/20 and gives us the opportunity to look back at a change in our life and when we are honest, find the good in where our lives went from there.

I LOVE change! I thrive on it. I know that not all people do, including my wonderful spouse. He doesn’t take change very well. I jump to change quickly (which is not always a good thing) and he can take forever to make a change (not always good either). So how can we be more open to change and make those changes with thought? Ask for help. Have a mentor or several mentors. Rely on family and friends. Whatever you choose, always remember that you are not alone. There is someone in your worldly circle of influence who has likely been through what you are going through and can help you. Reach out. Then when you are safely through the change, look around for someone else who may need your guidance and pay it forward.

Time for a Change?

Nila Thompson

Change is hard for a lot of people. It can be uncomfortable, stressful, and just what you need. Change is how we all have ended up where we are today. So how do you know when it is time to make a change in your life? There are a few key factors to look for that may help you in making that decision.

Are you enthusiastic when you wake up? Instantly dreading the start of the day can be a clear sign that it is time for a change in your life. If this is something that is happening a lot, do something about it. Determine the cause of the trepidation and find solutions to resolve the feelings or free yourself from the situation. You have choices, don’t forget that.

Maybe your morning is not dreadful, but it feels like every single day is Groundhog’s Day. It might be a pleasant feeling for some. For others, it might mean that you have stopped growing. There are no challenges or obstacles that you need to overcome. Growth occurs outside of our comfort zones. It can be easy to get motivated again by adjusting your routine, looking for a promotion or additional responsibilities, or by adding a new hobby. These simple steps can bring motivation back into your life.

If small issues feel like a major problem, you may need a change. It is easy to get irritated by little nuisances when we feel stuck. Remember that mental health affects physical health. Staying in this realm is never a good idea. Stay in tune with your feelings. Don’t allow your internal struggles to affect your personal and professional relationships. Instead, get out of your rut! Make a change.

Are you living in the past? If all the great things you talk about happened years ago, you might need a change. The only way to have new stories is by exploring new opportunities! Your “someday” starts today. Ask yourself what you have always wanted to do that you can do now. Do it!

Changes don’t have to be huge. Small steps forward can make a big difference. There are simple steps to keep us motivated in life and help us maintain our personal and professional goals. Do a periodic assessment of your current situation by asking yourself these simple questions;

  • Am I feeling passionate about my life?
  • What is my desired outcome?
  • Is what I am currently doing going to get me there?
  • If not, what do I need to change to get back on track?

Embrace the changes that need to be made in life. They may not be easy, but they could be exciting!
